South Petherton Recreation Ground has something for everyone!
Tucked away at the top of Lightgate Lane, this well-maintained facility which is owned and maintained by the Parish Council, is open year-round and offers a welcoming retreat for residents and visitors alike. Just minutes from the village centre this cherished green space blends leisure, sport, and local community spirit.
The Recreation Ground boasts a wide array of amenities:
➢ The full-sized football pitch is home to South Petherton Football Club
➢ During the summer months, cricket pitches and cricket nets are home for South Petherton Cricket Club The ground is home to seasonal fixtures and training sessions.
➢ Three tennis courts with a clubhouse hosting the South Petherton Tennis Club
➢ A lawn bowling green, complete with its own clubhouse and indoor short mat bowls for local enthusiasts South Petherton Bowling Club
➢ The Mike Saint Sports Pavilion contains changing rooms which are used by South Petherton’s Football and Cricket teams and has kitchen, bar and toilet facilities and is available for private bookings at the Sports Pavilion Facebook page
➢ The Scout Hut is home to the very active 2nd South Petherton Scout Group who every week give around 60 people aged 6 to 14 the skills they need to think on their feet and play their part in community life.
➢ The Youth Club hosts evening sessions for ages 10–19 offering activities like Duke of Edinburgh programs and informal drop-in sessions. It’s a vital hub for young people to connect, learn, and grow and is run by Reach Youth Work
➢ South Petherton C of E Pre-School offer a welcoming, nurturing and supportive environment, where children are safe, happy and excited to learn.
➢ Children’s Play Area: A safe space for younger visitors.
➢ BMX Track for adventurous riders.
➢ The Memorial Garden: A peaceful corner with seating for quiet reflection.
➢ Parking and Accessibility: A 45-space car park and full disabled access throughout the site.
South Petherton Carnival
Somerset is renowned for its illuminated carnival season from September to November and South Petherton Recreation Ground plays host to the iconic South Petherton Carnival in early September each year. The illuminated parade features a dazzling procession of floats, bands, majorettes, and walking entries. The carnival kicks off at Lightgate Recreation Ground, where a funfair sets up, before the parade winds through the village streets. Proceeds from the event support local charities and organisations within the parish.
Dog-Free Zone
For health and safety reasons, dogs are not permitted on the grounds. This policy aligns with ROSPA guidance to ensure a clean and secure environment for all users.
